About Me:
Pianist, organist, singer and songwriter GREGORY BARRETT hails from Tennessee USA, has toured extensively throughout the US and Europe, and worked solo, as a frontman with his own bands, and as a sideman with numerous major acts on both sides of the Atlantic, including: CHUCK BERRY, JOHNNY CASH, CARL PERKINS ("Blue Suede Shoes"), ALLMAN BROS. GUITARIST DICKEY BETTS, EMMYLOU HARRIS (video below), TRACY NELSON, ROSEANNE CASH, DOBIE GRAY ("Drift Away"),THE SPENCER DAVIS GROUP ("Gimme Some Lovin'), WILLIE NELSON, BOBBY BARE ("Detroit City"), ORIGINAL ELVIS DRUMMER D.J. FONTANA, THE BURRITO BROTHERS, DR. HOOK, JOHN SEBASTIAN, SHEL SILVERSTEIN, CHRIS FARLOWE, English R&B Legends ALBIE DONNELLY'S SUPERCHARGE (for whom he was lead singer/keys man 1993-1999: videos below), and many more. His first solo CD "MEMPHIS HEAT" (INAK/In-akustik, 1997:selected cuts below) featured Tracy Nelson on duet vocals and the Supercharge Horns, and received critical acclaim in Europe. His recent self-produced second CD "NEW ORLEANS IS A PIANO TOWN" (selected cuts below), a 2009 release which pays tribute to the New Orleans piano tradition, is receiving worldwide airplay in internet radio. Barrett, who lived in Europe from 1987 to 1999 and speaks fluent German, relocated to Atlanta at the turn of the century, where he worked with (among others) Alligator Records' blues artist TINSLEY ELLIS. He fronted his own trio FARGO, BARRETT and DAVIES (videos below), which specialized in Funky New Orleans R&B, and played regularly solo. He represented the Atlanta Blues Society twice in the Memphis International Blues Challenge, and in 2004 was a finalist there as a member of the KEN RHYNE BAND. A new CD, his jazziest to date, is in the works. In summer 2011 he returned to Europe to work with his former duo partner TOMMY SCHNELLER, an outstanding German singer and saxophonist. He co-wrote songs for the Tommy Schneller CD "SMILING FOR A REASON", Cable Car Records (Germany) 2011, which won the German Recording Critics' Prize in 2012 and reached number 14 in the USA on the Living Blues chart. The band also won the International Blues Foundation's German Blues Challenge in 2012, and represented Germany in the European Blues Challenge in Toulouse, France in 2013. This year Gregory Barrett begins working in Europe with the new Retro-Soul-Review "FROM MEMPHIS TO MOTOWN" (promo video below)--represented by Merkle-Kulturkonzepte of Germany--as singer, pianist and organist, and plans to release a new solo CD "ONE PIANO, ONE VOICE" based on his New Orleans solo show.
