“The blues is a vital part of history and must be spreaded around the world because it is one of the main genre in the music industry and it should be treated as such. For example, there’s Blues, Country, Rhythm & Blues, Pop, Pop Rock, Bluegrass, Folk etc. The role of the music is to tell a story that people can relate to and the musicians role is to bring it to light by playing in every key and note that’s required.”

What do you learn about yourself from the blues and what does the blues means to you?
“My truths” the blues is me telling the story of my life in songs. Singing is my gift from GOD and it calms me because of the passion I have for it.
The blues to me is very distinguish and it gives true meaning of what a person is going through. I love the 4-bar blues because Singing in that tone expresses how and what you feel at that particular time. Blues motivates me and soothe me all at the same time. It is timeless and captivates an audience that understands the story that an Artist is singing without reading it in a book.
What keeps a musician passionate over the years in Black American Music? What is the driving force behind your continuous support for your music on stage?
First, I’m an Artist that sings the Blues. I have been blessed to know what key and note that I want to sing in…that is my passion. That’s how I am able to perform and express every word of the song in such a passionate way. When the musicians are in rehearsal they tell each other to bring their A+ game to play behind me because of my Tone, my Passion and the rhythm of my voice carrying every note. As well as to watch my body movements without me turning around let them know where I’m going this is what I consider Great musicians that are passionate, caring and Love what they do.
The driving force behind me is my “other eye” MzPattyDuke, my Mate of 17 years…That’s what I call her. She keeps me motivated in spite of me wanting to give up because of going years without having any shows. She’ll say “perhaps GOD didn’t want you on that one…HE’S saving you for a bigger and better one”. Afterwards, she’ll say “now come on and do a showcase for me” and I’ll start singing and the two of us act like we have a full audience…that’s myPattyDuke! (lol).

Why do you think that the Texas Blues scene continues to generate such a devoted following?
In my honest opinion, I really don’t see that much blues in Texas. At least, if it is I am not apart of it. However, what I do know that the blues is considered a slow 4 bar which is referred to as a four measure musical short phrase of repeating intros to build a 12-bar blues structure and me being embedded into the blues have not heard or seen that displayed here in Texas.
What’s been the highlights in your life and career so far? Are there any memories from gigs, jams, opening acts and studio sessions which you’ll like to share with us?
The highlights in my career has been hitting the stages in Italy and Switzerland. I prayed without ceasing to GOD to allow my dreams to come true of traveling overseas to perform and through HIS Grace, Mercy & Favor HE Did just that…HALLELUJAH!
Every aspect of my journey has been Outstanding by doing jam sessions in restaurants, benefits to help raise money for radio stations such as KNON here in Texas, helped to raise $100K fundraiser for a high school band Wilmer Hutchins to travel to New Orleans,Louisianato perform at the Sugar Bowl, a benefit show to help raise money for the Tornado victims in Garland, Texas , did a benefit show to help raise funds for Toys for Tots for the Marines in Lake Charles, Louisiana and received the Key to the City from then Mayor Randy Roach, as well as receiving a key to the City of Waelder, Texas my hometown. In addition to the most exciting part of my journey was in 2010 when I walked into Carl Marshall’s studio through CDS Records to record my first album under a label. I have Grace the stage and opened up for Many Artist during this journey and it was truly a Blessing because that’s all I LOVE to do and want to do is SING. In spite of these down years of no shows I look at it in the spiritual realm of “that’s not where GOD wanted me to be” and keep on trusting in HIS word.
“The only thing I’ve been able to do is share it on social media due to being told by a few radio stations and many promoters that my music doesn’t fit their format. I do and have occasionally received phone calls from some of the younger Artist who are Rappers and Soul singers wanting to collaborate and this inspires me to know that some do enjoy my works.” (Captain Jack Watson / Photo by Stefano Zannoni)
What do you miss most nowadays from the music of the past? What are your hopes and fears for the future of?
I mostly miss Artist performing with live bands.
I hope that promoters utilize Artist by hiring them with a or their band to give people more reasons to attend and support. My fear is that if this continues the world will have to listen to the music of those who have died and we, who are alive won’t be heard.
What are some of the most important lessons you have learned from your experience in the music paths?
I’ve learned to stay true to your craft. I am a Blues Artist (singer) and I sing the blues.
Why is it important to preserve and spread the blues? What is the role of music/musician in today’s society?
The blues is a vital part of history and must be spreaded around the world because it is one of the main genre in the music industry and it should be treated as such. For example, there’s Blues, Country, Rhythm & Blues, Pop, Pop Rock, Bluegrass, Folk etc.
The role of the music is to tell a story that people can relate to and the musicians role is to bring it to light by playing in every key and note that’s required.
What are you doing to keep your music relevant today to develop it and present it to the new generation?
The only thing I’ve been able to do is share it on social media due to being told by a few radio stations and many promoters that my music doesn’t fit their format.
I do and have occasionally received phone calls from some of the younger Artist who are Rappers and Soul singers wanting to collaborate and this inspires me to know that some do enjoy my works.
