The first time I listened to this album I concluded that this was a very special listening experience. By now I've heard it a number of times and that conclusion is only confirmed. Paul Karapiperis is a Greek multi-instrumentalist, who does not just blindly copy the default blues work. The whole sounds rather spherical and spooky. Although clearly inspired by the blues; he is not afraid to take unusual steps.

The new album "One Sin In Seven Parts" is actually a concept album, which consists of seven parts. He is accompanied by Lefteris Bessios (bass), Panagiotis Daras (guitar), Stathis Evageliou (drums) and  as 'special guests' Sotiris Kouroutis (cymbals), Teris Martinos (guitar, alto sax) and John Karastathis (acoustic guitar).
The structure of the songs - a basic blues with surprising twists, unusual choirs, special sounds - can be called absolutely surprising and captivates from beginning to end. The entire album is available on YouTube and can be downloaded via the website.

BarnOwlBlues finds this album very surprising and refreshing. It might take some getting used to, but it is certainly worth a listen.

Μετά το "Fifteen Raindrops In An Ocean Of Blues Tales" (2009)  και το "Somethin' Like Blues or Haunted Ballads" (2012), η καινούρια προσωπική δουλειά του Παύλου Καραπιπέρη -τραγουδιστή και αρμονικίστα του συγκροτήματος Small Blues Trap- είναι το “One Sin In Seven Parts”, ένα τραγούδι το οποίο αποτελείται από 7 μέρη.

O δίσκος λοιπόν μου άρεσε πολύ. Bluesy και αρκετά σκοτεινό το νέο αυτό δημιούργημα του Παύλου, αποτελεί μια δυνατή πρόταση για τους φαν του είδους. Εδώ δε θα βρείτε όμως μόνο  "κλασσικούς" blues ήχους αλλά αρκετά ετερόκλητα και ethnic στοιχεία παιγμένα από όργανα όπως το σαντούρι και ο μπαγλαμάς.

Γενικά το αποτέλεσμα είναι αρκετά "προοδευτικό" και μαγευτικά εκκεντρικό και απέχει πολύ από το "μία από τα ίδια" που χαρακτηρίζει αρκετούς σημερινούς blues δημιουργούς. Προσωπικά από τα πρώτα λεπτά μου κέντρισε το ενδιαφέρον.

Τα φωνητικά είναι τραχιά και ιδιαίτερα και δένουν με το μουσικό μέρος. Δεν επικεντρώθηκα πάντως σε συγκεκριμένα τραγούδια και τίτλους τραγουδιών.
Η μικρή διάρκεια του με έκανε να απορροφηθώ σε ένα μουσικό ταξίδι χωρίς περιττά στοιχεία.

Με λίγα λόγια απαιτεί την προσοχή σου αλλά θα σε ανταμείψει άμεσα.

Συνεχίζει το μονοπάτι που έχει χαράξει ήδη με δύο προσωπικές δουλειές ο Παύλος Καραπιπέρης των Small Blues Trap. Και είναι ένα μονοπάτι δύσκολο για να πούμε την αλήθεια, που όχι μόνο τον κρατά μακριά από την mainstream μουσική σκηνή (ποιός μπλουζίστας και μάλιστα στην Ελλάδα μπορεί να καυχηθεί για το αντίθετο;) αλλά τον απομακρύνει ακόμα και από του φίλους του είδους ή ίσως, για να είμαι πιο σωστός, από τους περιστασιακούς φίλους του είδους. Γιατί ο Καραπιπέρης δεν παίζει απλώς blues αλλά προσπαθεί να τα εξελίξει, να πατήσει και στη φόρμα τους αλλά να τα αλλάξει κιόλας. Σε κάποιο παλιότερο κείμενο για τους Small Blues Trap είχα μιλήσει για post blues και θα πρέπει να επιμείνω στον όρο. Άρα λοιπόν ξεχάστε (και) στο "One Sin In Seven Parts" όποια σχολή κι αν έχετε στο μυαλό σας για τα blues και κοιτάξτε στο μέλλον γυρνώντας όμως πίσω, στον αρχέγονο και παραδοσιακό τρόπο παιξίματος των blues.

Έχει νεοτερισμούς το "One Sin In Seven Parts". Ξεκινώντας από τα όργανα που ακούγονται και περιλαμβάνουν ακόμα και μπαγλαμά ή πολίτικη λύρα, συνεχίζοντας στην αφαιρετική και αφηρημένη φόρμα των τραγουδιών και κορυφώνοντας ίσως στην έμπνευση του ενός τραγουδιού σε επτά μέρη. Μία έμπνευση που πιθανόν δεν είναι όπως τη φαντάζεστε, μία σουίτα τρόπον τινά. Αντίθετα είναι όντως ένα τραγούδι το οποίο έχει σπάσει σε επτά μέρη και σε κάθε μέρος υπάρχει μία εμφανώς απότομη αλλαγή, συνήθως στο μέσο του κάθε μέρους, πέρα από το κύριο σώμα αυτού του ενός τραγουδιού. Η αλλαγή αυτή έρχεται ως μία επέκταση του ήχου για να ενισχύσει την ατμόσφαιρα που θέλει να δώσει στο σημείο αυτό ο δημιουργός του.

Υπάρχουν λοιπόν νεοτερισμοί, υπάρχει όμως και η παράδοση. Όσο σύγχρονο κι αν είναι το άκουσμα, άλλο τόσο στην πλειοψηφία του το χαλαρό και ήπιο παίξιμο των μουσικών θα μπορούσε εύκολα να τοποθετηθεί σε μία εικόνα ενός νέγρου στο Μισισιπή, κάτω από έναν έναστρο ουρανό, να δημιουργεί αφηρημένα ήχους με την κιθάρα του ατενίζοντας μία φυτεία. Κλισέ εικόνα, αλλά χαρακτηριστική των γήινων ρυθμών που δημιουργεί η μουσική του Καραπιπέρη.

Σε μία εποχή όπου ένα τραγούδι πρέπει να είναι τρίλεπτο και ραδιοφωνικό και όχι πολύπλοκο και σπασμένο σε επτά μέρη, είναι πραγματικά φιλόδοξη η προσπάθεια του Καραπιπέρη και καλλιτεχνικά απολύτως επιτυχημένη. Είναι από τις φορές που δυσκολεύομαι να ξεχωρίσω κάποιο track που να προτείνω για ακρόαση. Αν είστε γνώστες της μουσικής του, κατεβάστε το από το site των Small Blues Trap και αφιερώστε του τον χρόνο που του αξίζει. Αν όχι, ξεκινήστε από τις παλιότερες δουλειές του και αφήστε τον να σας εξελίξει όπως εξελίσσει και τη μουσική του.

Ahhhh, Facebook.  How were we, as a world civilization, ever able to function without being able to see what our fellow man is up to during every waking hour of every day?  Seriously, tho, the social media outlets can serve a meaningful purpose when it comes to exposing new and exciting music to a literal world-wide audience.  Such is the case with bluesman Paul Karapiperis, all the way from Central Greece and the village of Malesina.  We met thru Facebook, and his latest album, “One Sin In Seven Parts,” can be viewed as a video on YouTube.

Paul has actually taken one song and divided it into seven parts, within the concept of the story of a man and his journeys thru life.  Paul is a dedicated student of the blues, with influences ranging from Muddy to Son House, thru Peter Green and Captain Beefheart.  He sings with a booming, powerful brogue, not unlike another friend of ours, Dave Arcari from the UK.

The piece starts with “Welcome Boy,” over Paul’s ethereal slide guitar intro, which includes unusual percussion via Paul’s metallophone and baglamas.  His harp “welcomes” a young man into “the craziest world you’ve ever seen.”  Part Two begins with Paul’s acoustic slide and begs the question as to why a couple would bring a child “In This World Of Madness.”  The “endless boogie” of John Lee Hooker kicks off the rather somber tale of “Your Ticket To Adventure,” where Paul warns of “confusion within the confines” of alleged “words of wisdom.”

“Callin’ Down The Riverside” foretells that a hard rain’s gonna fall, and his wailing harp evokes those ill winds blowng as this piece ends.  “A Secret Place” has an acoustic opening that segues’ into the most “electrified” portion of the whole set, as screaming guitar lines complete this tune set over a rhumba beat.  A cool, Sonny Boy Williamson-styled country-blues-harp riff opens the next portion, as Paul urges us all to “Dig In Your Soul” to find the truth.  This one reminded us of Hubert Sumlin’s works with Howlin’ Wolf.  The set closes as it began, this time with a minor-key, slow-blues in the vein of SRV, “The Dreamland’s door.”

Thanks to social media, we are much the better off for hsving been introduced to Paul Karapiperis and “One Sin In Seven Parts.”  For a shot of something both old and new in blues, check out his FaceBook and YouTube pages today!

Singer-songwriter en multi-instrumentalist Paul Karapiperis komt uit het kleine Griekse dorpje Malesina. En jawel, ook daar wordt heel wat blues gespeeld. Paul richtte in 2004 de band The Small Blues Trap band op. Tussen oktober en april 2005 blikten ze het album ‘Our Trap’ in. Een jaar later was er dan ‘Crossroads Ritual’ en ‘Rdd Snakes & Cave Bats’ uit 2010. Vorig jaar hadden ze een bescheiden bijval met de release ‘The Longest Road I Know’. Tussendoor was Paul ook succesvol met solo ontwerpen als ‘Fifteen Raindrops In An Ocean’ in 2009 en twee jaar later met ‘Somethin’ Like Blues Or Haunted Ballads’. Nu is er zijn nieuwste telg ‘One Sin In Seven Parts’. Op zijn minste gezegd een zeer avontuurlijk project dat bestaat uit zeven afzonderlijke delen die eigenlijk een geheel vormen. Hij krijgt backing van Lefteris Pensions (bas), Panagiotis Dars (gitaar), Stathis Evageliou (drums) en van ‘special guests’ Sotiris Kouroutis (cimbalen), Teris Martinos (gitaar en alt sax) en John Karastathis op akoestische gitaar. Dat Paul de blues uitstraalt -en uitademt- staat buiten kijf, al geeft hij wel heel graag een persoonlijke dimensie aan het geheel. En dat wordt al meteen duidelijk in de openingsong ‘Welcome Boy’. Een constant tikkende klok en geniale en heavy gitaarsolo’s vormen de basis voor de sound. Tot plots Paul’s zanderige stem het geheel komt opvrolijkt. In de track ‘In This World Of Madness’ weerklinkt enigszins het diepe zuiden rond de Mississippi. Na een lange intro komt een slidegitaar op resonatorgitaar aanzetten. En die vind op zijn beurt dan weer een knappe interactie met Paul’s bluesharp. Het nummer ‘Your Ticket To Adventure’ begint net iets opgewekter dan zijn voorganger. Melodieuze klanken vormen alweer het klankenpalet voor de sound. Hier bemerken wij ook voor het eerst een Griekse bluesy ondertoon. In het akoestische ’A Callin Down The Riverside’ gaat het crescendo en blijmoedig naar ’A Secret Place’. In beide nummers zorgen de psychedelische stemmingswisselingen voor zeer aangename wendingen. De opwindende harptunes van  het sfeervolle ‘Dig In Your Soul’ vervallen al even snel in een bluestrage schikking. Net zoals in de emotionele afsluiter ‘The Dreamland’s Door’, dat verder is opgesmukt door schitterende gitaarriffs.
Het geheel klinkt op zijn zachts gezegd zeer avontuurlijk. Paul Karapiperis is een sympathieke Griek die de blues uitstraalt met zeer persoonlijke arrangementen. Kijk even op zijn site en ontdek deze wonderbaarlijke sound.

Multi instrumentalist Paul Karapiperis is the leader of Greek blues band Small Blues Trap – not one of those outfits who tend to reinterpret the likes of ‘Sweet Home Chicago’, ‘Got My Mojo Working’ or ‘Dust My Broom’ – and Paul’s solo career tends to involve him moving even further towards a rather unique personal expression.

This is his third effort under his own name, following on from 2009’s “Fifteen Raindrops In An Ocean Of Blues Tales” and 2012’s “Somethin’ Like Blues Or Haunted Ballads”, with the latter title also rather appropriate for this set, which is one song split into seven parts, though it can also be listened to as seven separate different entities.

Much of the album is rather spooky sounding and most of it is bluesy, with Mississippi Delta styled guitar licks and wailing harmonica set against walls of sound and with Paul’s breathy but gruff vocals laid on top. ‘A Secret Place’ – track five – lurches from a rather quiet introspective acoustic item into a full blown slab of blazing blues-rock, more than a little reminiscent of vintage Santana, before the next track opens in almost Rice Miller fashion and slides into a loose quasi-work-song cum Howling Wolf inspired piece.

The closing number, ‘The Dreamland’s Door’ is, initially at least, rather akin to some of the best of the late 60s UK blues boom, at least musically. Bear in mind though that these descriptions are all of necessity rather loose and intended merely to give a flavor of what is actually a rather distinctive and highly individual set. Very interesting indeed…

Μια από τις κρυφές "αμαρτίες" που δεν προσπαθώ να κρύψω ιδιαίτερα, είναι το ότι αν τύχει και ακούσω Blues νιώθω ευχάριστα, θλιμμένα, όμορφα, περίεργα.. νιώθω πως έστω και υποσυνείδητα αυτή η μουσική μου αρέσει πολύ λες και κρύβει κάτι, ενώ με τον τρόπο της σου κλείνει πονηρά το μάτι!

Βέβαια αν και δεν έχω εντρυφήσει στο είδος, αφού μια πιο "μοναδική" και "ιδιαίτερη" μουσική έχει κερδίσει τη καρδιά μου.. από την άλλη είμαι σίγουρος ότι τα Blues είναι άτυπα η βάση για το σκληρό ήχο και όχι μόνο!

Δεν ξέρω αν η υποστήριξη αυτής της γνώμης είναι "αμαρτία", μα ο Παύλος Καραπιπέρης γνωστός από τις δουλειές του με τους Small Blues Trap, θεωρώ πως θα συμφωνήσει μαζί μου και ως απάντηση θα μας δώσει την τρίτη δουλειά του με τίτλο "One Sin In Seven Parts", που δεν είναι τίποτ' άλλο από αυτό που λέει ο τίτλος!

Εφτά κομμάτια που ενώνοντάς τα δημιουργούν μια αμαρτία, δηλαδή ένα στην ουσία τραγούδι χωρισμένο σε εφτά μέρη (τυχαίος ο αριθμός;!).

Κι επειδή αμαρτία εξομολογουμένη αμαρτία ουκ έχει, θα πω πως θαύμασα την προσθήκη διαφορετικών, πιο "ethnic" οργάνων (πολίτικης λύρας, σαντούρι, μπαγλαμάς κ.α.), την psycho 70's αίσθηση, αλλά υπήρξαν και αρκετές στιγμές που αυτό με κούρασε και βαρέθηκα για να είμαι ειλικρινής!

Οκ σίγουρα το "One Sin In Seven Parts" δεν απευθύνεται στους πολλούς και δημιουργήθηκε από τον Παύλο με πρώτιστο σκοπό να εκφράσει το δικό του εσωτερικό κόσμο, κάτι που όμως δε σημαίνει ότι δε θα αρέσει σε αρκετούς.

Τα κομμάτια "Welcome Boy", "Your Ticket To Adventure", "Dig In Your Soul", είναι μοναδικά και αξίζουν της προσοχής σας, όπως  φυσικά ολόκληρο το άλμπουμ, ιδιαίτερα στους πιο blues-"ψαγμένους" ακροατές!

Το δίσκο μπορείτε εύκολα να ακούσετε εννοείται free, στο youtube ή στο site της μπάντας!!

Definitely one of the most remarkable 'blues albums I have ever heard is the third personal album of the Greek singer, guitarist and harmonica player Paul Karapiperis  titled  “One Sin Seven Parts”. I had to listen to the previously released albums " Fifteen Raindrops In An Ocean Of Blues Tales "(2009) and "Somethin 'Like Blues Or Haunted Ballads" (2012).  This recent album "One Sin Seven Parts" consists of a song divided into seven parts.

Incidentally, Paul Karapiperis and his group Small Blues Trap have already recorded a number of CDs. This project also includes atmospheric and predominantly slow songs and it is full of many unexpected twists.  You immediately hear the first song "Welcome Boy" which begins with beautifully bluesy guitar work and ominous background vocals. After two and a half-minute, the voice of Paul Karapiperis makes its presence which indeed is remarkably similar to Tom Waits and Captain Beefheart.  The way of singing is reminiscent of these musicians. After four and a half minutes, I experienced a much unexpected turn. The song continues to fascinate me, especially the (slide) guitar and harmonica playing which are beautiful. And that goes for the six sections that follow.

The atmosphere that the song "Your Ticket to Adventure" evokes reminds me of early Pink Floyd. "A Callin 'Down The Riverside" begins like a real blues song goes, but after a little over two minutes it becomes psychedelic. It may sound very strange, but I found it similar to the early Pink Floyd albums.

 In short: 32 minutes of very adventurous blues. I think many blues lovers will be delighted but others might find it a little 'too much' anyway. The entire project can be downloaded at:http://www.smallbluestrap.gr/mp3/mp3.html.
