How has the music influenced your views of the world?

It hasn’t influenced how I view things, but there’s always something different going on. I‘d be lying if I said that wasn't’ something that fires up new ideas.

What moment changed your music life the most?

Endless. The first time I held a microphone, the first time I wrote a song or played guitar. The first time on stage, the first time on the radio. Lots of cherry poppin’ first times in this business and isn’t it grand?

How do you describe your sound, music philosophy and songbook? Where does your creative drive come from?

The music comes to me unfiltered. I don't like to put a finger on one type of “category”. Its got a twang, its got a temperament and a pulse and it knows what its doing. It’s the honky tonk of country and blues at a prom - brawling bare knuckles at times or crying in the corner into a spiked glass of pink fruit punch or taking home the shiny crown. The drive comes from the raw, unfiltered reality of life and sometimes questionable decisions that come with it and our repertoire is filled with tales of just that.

Exposing the human condition through music is the way to go. That we can all relate to.” (Ginger St. James, a dynamic force on the Canadian music scene, known for her commanding voice, magnetic stage presence, and a captivating blend of rockabilly, country, and blues / Photo by Danielle Monica)

What do you miss most nowadays from the music of the past? What are your hopes and fears for the future of?

I don't really miss anything from the past. I have lots of too good memories. I stay in the moment. It’s important for me to do that and I don’t not look back too long on much. I strive for the best and the future looks pretty fancy.

What is the driving force behind your continuous support for your art? What's the balance in music between technique (skills) and soul/emotions?

There’s no choice in the matter when it comes to my art. It's owned and operated by my brain and what that dictates. It’s a Gift thats always on. It’s in my head like an orchestra, the guitar licks, bass lines and beats. Every single note and phrase has an emotional attachment. Skills are just as important, but it takes the right person to play them to be able to properly articulate the mind masterpiece I hear.

What does to be a female artist in a Man’s World as James Brown says? What is the status of women in music?

I don't think I’ve ever felt like I was on different footing. It never crossed my mind. “A mans world” is just plain nonsense. Ick even. Swim or Swim. Us gals are doing just fine as far as I see. With all of these big successful musicians being women, I’d ask you - what its like to be a man in a “Mans World”?

What is the impact of music on the socio-cultural implications? How do you want the music to affect people?

I want everyone to have a really, really good time.

What are some of the most important lessons you have learned from your experience in the music paths?

Trust your gut. Practice. Pay attention. Keep your receipts.

What are you doing to keep your music relevant today, to develop it and present it to the new generation?

Exposing the human condition through music is the way to go. That we can all relate to.
